Surveys
For DESI, data collection is a process and not an event. Information on citizens is a basic tool for Gram Panchayats level planning. Hence, DESI initiated people based surveys and micro-planning throughout India. A data collection tool has been developed for general population data, sectoral data, exploitation data, resource data and organizational data. NGOs/CBOs have been trained to collect data and analyse the same.
DESI, on request from Social Welfare Dept., Delhi, developed a Policy/Strategy paper based on Rapid Assessment on Flesh Trade and submitted to the State (Delhi) and Central Govt. (Dept. of Women and Child Development, Jt.Secy) for policy changes regarding how to deal with the victims. We have advocated humane policy measures rather than punitive measures. Majority of the FSWs are young girls including adolescent children. The FSW networks are growing despite trafficking laws. This paper deals with the issues such as: social stigma and isolation from the mainstream, exploitation from Pimps and Police machineries, improper medical attention. The explorative assessment of new mini-brothels which exploited poor migrants/immigrants from Bangladesh led to Govt. action on integrated inputs to them.
DESI, during various periods, has conducted vocational training for the poorer sections who are the unemployed young people both men and women. Several trades have so far been covered under this component viz.: Garment making: DESI purchased tailoring machines which are put to use in teaching the adolescent girls/young women the skills of garment making. This training is going on in Maksoodpur Village of GB Nagar District. Computer training: Approx. 60 girls have been receiving traiing in computer basics every year. The beneficiaries come from various sub-urban areas of Ramprastha. They are trained in basic computer skills viz. MS-Office, and Email/internet use.
